A Real Nice Piece of Equipment at a bargain price,

We bought the D90 to replace an aging D100, we also own a D300. I would HIGHLY recommend everyone considering a D300 take a look at the D90 as it does EVERYTHING either of us need to do
and at a much lower price. I love the D300, if I had to replace it the D90 would have to be a serious contender given the huge price difference. The sensor and image capturing capabilities are identical to the D300. while the D300 allows much more customization and pre-set configurations, we find that we rarely use them. The nice little 18-105 VR zoom is also pretty nice for the price.
BTW purchase the $9.99 Amazon branded remote trigger while you're at it. NL-L3 Nikon replacement! One more thing, this camera has a 100% automatic, point and shoot setting so you can hand it to your mother and just show her the shutter release, even pops up the flash if needed. HD video capable too!

Great Camera & Lens Combo,

Spent two weeks in China and Singapore (Jan 2011) and took 1200 pix. Only needed the 18-105 lens which took close up, portrait, telephoto, action and night shots. My pictures turned out great just using the auto mode and point and shoot. Could not believe how well the night shots turned out using only ambient light. The D90 worked just fine in sub freezing temps and also the tropical moisture of Singapore. The auto mode allowed me to concentrate on composition and not worry about the settings. You cannot go wrong with this camera.

Don't overlook this camera despite newer models,

This camera has been technically superceded by the D7000, which of course costs more. However, after having owned one for two years now, I can say that it is still terrific and fully capable of rendering fantastic photos. For examples, search "D90" on Flickr. You can probably pick one up at a significant discount now. Be aware, the water resistance is low, and I am not talking about taking it in the pool with you, I mean don't take it out in the rain AT ALL. I got caught in a downpour in which I thought I was shielding the camera with a plastic bag for the majority of the time but somehow a tiny amount of water got in and bad things happened. Fortunately Nikon honored the warranty and fully repaired the camera. Yea Nikon!

Review from Wired.com:
Nikon D90 Takes World Champion DSLR Title Belt
Sometimes the mere notion of being "number two" can light a motivational fire under your keister. Look at some famous folks who, despite being considered numero dos, went on to dominate their respective fields and even eclipse their predecessors: A pupil of Socrates, Plato opted not to go the hemlock-chugging route and instead helped lay down the foundations of Western philosophy. Tom Brady was destined to be a career second banana until Drew Bledsoe's internal bleeding set him on the path to three Super Bowl wins. Jean-Luc Picard played second fiddle to Kirk only to become the greatest captain in Star Trek. Ever. (Watch TNG's season 3 finale if you don't believe me.) And in the world of DSLR cameras, Nikon has been toiling to one day escape from the shadow of a certain photo-manufacturing giant whose name rhymes with "Danon." And with its newest shooter it looks like that day may have finally come.
